The comprehensive harvest of taking an intercultural communication course
This semester, I am taking an IC course. It is a comprehensive course through different nations and different cultures. 1950S American Edward Hall was named as the father of intercultural communication, by his masterpiece published book, which is The Silent language. The course we learn through the introduction, verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and culture differences in negotiation styles.
The most interesting unit that wants to drive me to know further about is the chapter of nonverbal communication, and there are four areas including nonverbal communication are Chronemics, Proxemics, Kinesics, and Paralanguage. The most unforgettable case that shows in the textbook is the most obvious one. If students can understand what’s the teacher is teaching about, they will keep eye contact with the teacher. If not, the result will be vice versa. Also, there are two time cultures, which are Mono-chronic time and Poly chronic time culture. Mono-Chronic time culture belongs to those countries in Northern, Western Europe and North America. There is a example that showing the difference between these, which are an US diplomat got a meeting with an African diplomat, the US diplomat arrives at the place at the accurate time, waiting for 30 minutes got no result from the diplomat of African, the American diplomat is already on pins and needle, at last he wait for one hour and entered in the room for the meeting, but to US diplomat surprise, the African diplomat didn’t meet him alone,but with several countries diplomat. This shows the culture difference between these two time manner cultures. The American belongs to Monochronic, which means one time just doing one thing, clock bound, promptness. But African is on the contrary, they like to do several things at the same time. Also, Africans didn’t think late for one hour is late in his culture. It is also considering it is acceptable, nor did Americans think like that.
From this course, I learn a lot of how to be appropriate in different cultures and different countries. It is important to deeply remember in mind, when in Rome, do as Romans do and be multiculturalism |
